Audition Video Taping Tuesday (hopefully)

Once again we are planning to try to video tape the Audition Tape for the Tournament of Roses Parade this Tuesday, June 9th at 6:00pm.  ALL Bandos and Guardos from the 2008-2009 season must come with uniforms. It is very important that ALL students attend including seniors... we need the band to look BIG.

Trumbull Fire Department is providing an aerial unit to allow us to get aerial shots.

We realize that the current forecast is a 70% chance of rain.  If we have to call off this photo shoot because of rain, we'll send out a QuickNote late tomorrow afternoon.  But if you don't hear, please have your bando/guardo prepared for the taping.

If the weather does not allow there to be a video taping, there will still be practice... so 2009-2010 students need to come either way.

Parents' Meeting

There will be an incredible important Parents' Meeting this Tuesday, June 9th, at 7:30pm in ye olde band room.  Just SOME of the agenda items are:

  • Vote on next year's budget
  • Raffle drawing
  • Ad Book Packet Distribution
  • Band Camp Packet Distribution (I am pretty sure about this)

So, as you can see, this is really one you just can't miss... so we hope to see YOU there!

Drum Head Auction Begins

As you may have heard, we are auctioning off nine of the 12 Inaugural Parade drum heads.  To the best of our knowledge, only 72 of these drum heads were distributed (six pairs to six bands). This is your very exclusive chance to own a very special momento from a very special moment in our nation's and band's history!

Three drum heads are NOT being auctioned off:

  • One of the Drum 1 (smallest drum) heads.  This was used as a raffle prize for the Valentine's Day Dance.
  • Both of the Drum 6 (very largest drum) heads.  These were NOT used in the parade and are being retained as keepsakes by the band.

The auction will begin tomorrow morning and last until next Monday, June 15, at 10pm EDT.  Here's the details:

  • The auction is open to current THSGEMB families ONLY.
  • You must have a userid on the www.thsgembcorp.com website to participate.
  • You must be logged into www.thsgembcorp.com to bid.
  • Per our arrangements with Remo, the manufacturer, WINNERS MUST PROMISE NOT TO RESELL THE DRUM HEADS.
  • Unlike eBay, the price you bid is the price you pay if you win. Example: the current highest bid is $35.  If you bid $75, you become the highest winning bid at $75.
  • Since there are two drum heads for drums 2 through 5, the highest of the two winning bids for each drum gets first pick of which head they want to purchase.  In the case where the winning bids are equal, a coin will be tossed with the winner of the toss selecting the head they wish to buy.
  • When you log into www.thsgembcorp.com there will be a link at the top of the page directing you to the auction.  You may also click here to view the auction.
  • Any questions or difficulty bidding should be directed to editor@thsgembcorp.com.

The proceeds of this auction will go to this year's budget.

Inaugural T-Shirts still available

THSGEMB Inaugural t-shirts for sale @ $15.00 ea.  Available are: 1 ex-large, 2 Large, 2 Small.  If you are interested in purchasing one of the remaining t-shirts, please e-mail Renée Dolan at: kylerachael65@aol.com.

Guard Notes

by Ray Rhodes

(editor's note: we are republishing these notes already sent by Ray to the colorguard to make sure they get the widest distribution.)

Hi all!

There will be a brief meeting for ALL GUARD PARENTS:

Thursday, June 11th
6:30pm
Trumbull High School
Chorus Room

I would like to formally introduce myself to you and also introduce you to our 2009-2010 design and instructional staff.  We will also talk a little bit about this year's show, which will include a preview the guard's costumes!

I look forward to seeing you there!

Take care -

Ray

Hi all!

I am pleased to tell you that the girls have had a great couple of rehearsals over the past two weeks!  They are adjusting well to the staff and to trying different approaches to learning.  We have 35 girls on the roster, and they are all working well together!  We have a LOT to do, but we will get there!

There are several things to keep in mind - especially for those of you with young ladies who may be new to Fall Guard:

 -  Please expect them to tell you that they are frustrated - or that they feel like they "aren't good enough" to keep up with the rest of the team.  It takes a lot of time and training to be as competitive as we are.  Each performer has to start somewhere, and they will eventually get there.  Training is difficult at times, and it can be emotionally and physically exhausting from time to time, but in the end - the payoff is worth every tear!  I will notify you if I feel there are any issues with their abilities.

-  Please SUPPORT YOUR CHILD.  Be sure they come to rehearsal on time, and that they have the tools they need to have a good rehearsal.  They should pack a bag for the remaining spring and summer rehearsals that contains:
     o  WATER
o  A Light Snack (something healthy, nothing sugary) for quick breaks
o  Insect Repellant (we work outside, unless it is raining)
o  Sweatshirt or something warm to put on when the temperature drops at the end of the evening
o  Inhalers, etc.  If your child has a medical need, please be sure I am made aware.  We do cardio each rehearsal, so we need to be able to help manage your child's health and safety.
o  Be sure they bring any equipment (flags, rifles, sabres, etc.) they have taken home.

-  ENCOURAGE THEM.  This activity in invaluable.  Help them get the most from the program by being involved, asking them how rehearsals went, watching them perform every chance you get, etc.  If they are struggling, ask them to contact a teammate to work with them outside of rehearsal.

-  Talk to me.  If your child tells you something that just doesn't "sound right", PLEASE COME AND TALK TO ME.  Remember, the kids are being pushed to work hard, and they may become frustrated from time to time.  Don't let issues fester.  If you have questions about anything, please talk to me.

-  If you would like these e-mail messages to go to any other e-mail address, please let me know.  I have one e-mail per child, but I am happy to add a second parent's e-mail address so that more than one parent is receiving messages.  Just let me know and I will add.

-  If your child is going to be missing a rehearsal, please be sure to notify me at rayrhodes0314@aol.com, or you may call me at (914) 906-8089 if you are in a pinch and don't have access to e-mail.

-  You may view our full schedule by visiting www.trumbullcolorguard.org.  Please remember that pick up time for the guard is 9pm for the remaining two spring rehearsals.

Please let me know if you need any other information.  Take care, and enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Ray

Wildwood Uniform Packing

Please pack uniforms in the garment bags so that they can be laid flat in the bus.

Guard Practice Note

From Ray Rhodes:

Hi all!

Please note that, although the guard will be rehearsing until 8:30pm this Thursday and next Tuesday and Thursday, they will be meeting in the Chorus room with the band until around 9pm.  I know that many of you arrived at 8:30pm and had to wait for a while for them to be "released"....  I do apologize for the inconvenience.  Please be ready to pick them up for 9pm for the remaining three spring rehearsals.

Also - Please note that Sharron Steere will be collecting ALL PREVIOUS UNIFORMS (with the exception of the parade uniform) at the beginning or end of each rehearsal.  Please send any old uniforms in with your child on Thursday so Sharron may inventory.

That's it for now!  Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Take care!

Ray

THSGEMB QuickNote: Bluefish TONIGHT / Guard What to Bring for Wildwood

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version

QuickNotes
editor@thsgembcorp.com
www.thsgembcorp.com

Apologies for two emails today...

Bluefish TONIGHT

A big thanks to Mrs. Steere for pointing out that there isn't Guard practice tonight... we are ALL playing at the Bluefish (and a big doh! to yours truly, your editor).

As a reminder:

The Bluefish performance occurs TONIGHT, Tuesday, June 2.  Details:

  • Bandos and guardos must wear their Firebird shirts and either khaki shorts or pants with CLEAN white sneakers.
  • Students need to bring their tickets!
  • Parents to transport kids to Harboryard and pick up.  Students must arrive at 6:00pm

Play ball! (er, ah, Play music!)

(There is soooo much going on it makes my head hurt at times!)

Guard What to Bring for Wildwood

We just heard the following from Ray Rhodes regarding what to bring to Wildwood... and I quote:

"Just to clarify what the guard needs to bring - They should bring their wind suits from the winter, rather than their Fall overjackets and black wind pants.  The shoes requested are from the Fall season.

My apologies for the confusion."

THSGEMB QuickNote: Audition Taping Canceled This Week / More on Wildwood / Redeemables

Audition Taping Canceled This Week

We just spoke with Mr. Horton, and because of the need to make sure the Wildwood luggage inspection goes smoothly, the audition taping for this week has been canceled.  This is probably a good thing anyway, because the forecast is for rain (again).

Another attempt will be made at the audition taping next Tuesday night and if that doesn't work, next Thursday night.

More on Wildwood

The luggage inspection schedule stands:

  • 5pm to 5:30pm: 8th graders and freshmen
  • 5:30pm to 6pm: Sophomores
  • 6pm to 6:30pm: Juniors (they will be released from practice for this period of time)
  • 6:30 to 7pm: Seniors

Parents MUST be present for the luggage check in.

  • All board members are reminded to be at the luggage inspection from 5pm to 7pm.

  • Operations is reminded that the truck must be opened and ready to accept luggage at 5pm.

  • There is a mandatory Wildwood chaperone meeting at 7pm after the luggage inspection at 7pm.

  • As a result in the delay of the audition taping, seniors' uniforms will NOT be collected after the Wildwood parade.  Arrangements will be made and sent via a QuickNote.

There were two lists of what to bring for the guard members.  This is the list from Ray Rhodes:

  • Parade uniform
  • Jazz sneakers
  • Fall over jacket
  • Black wind pants
  • Fall show shirt
  • Makeup – will be light and natural
  • Hair – slicked-back ponytail, bring brush, hair ties, hairspray and gel

This conflicts with this note in the same email:

"Guard will wear the parade uniform and the black shoes from the fall.   Guard members must bring their windsuit from winter."

It is my suggestion that guardos check with Ray tonight at practice.  When in doubt, bring both (and yes, I know that is easier said than done given how much most guardos pack!).

Redeemables

Jerry and Diane Scott, our new incredible redeemables chairs, are shouting out a request for volunteers for the June 13 Afternoon shift and both shifts on July 11.

  • The June 13 shift would count toward this year's minor requirements.
  • Serving on the July 11 date give you a jump on next year's minor requirements.
  • Students can serve at the redeemables drive (hey, they should carry some of the load of raising the money!)
  • The July 11th date is particularly urgent: we get LOTS of redeemables after the Fourth of July parties... which translates into lots of money.

If you'd like to take advantage of this incredible offer, well, lucky you because operators are standing by! You can reach Jerry and Diane Scott at 261-1390 or gscott2995@aol.com

Car Wash Recap

Special thank you to all the parents and kids who washed many cars on Saturday.  $5.00 for a clean car.... what a bargain and the best part was that the kids (and parents) had a great time.  Two wash buckets have not yet been claimed...please see Pat Drzal if they belong to you.  Thank you to everyone for your donation of towels and rags.  They have been washed and ready for our next car wash but if you would like yours returned, please see Renée Dolan on Thursday.

Wildwood General Itineray and Packing Guide

We've posted a link to this information before, but it seems that some people have been missing it, so here it is directly.

NOTE

The Parade Audition Taping planned for Thursday is playing havoc with the luggage inspection (see below).  Please remain flexible as we determine whether we put off the Parade Audition Taping or come up with some sort of alternate luggage inspection.

The luggage inspection also conflicts with practice starting at 6pm, so changes may be necessary for that reason, too.
