BRIDGEPORT-- Arthur Harris stood at North and Clinton avenues, bullhorn in hand. As he directed the marching bands and drum corps on to the 2009 Barnum Festival Great Street Parade Sunday morning, he urged the musicians to start playing. "These are my friends," he said, gesturing to the sidewalk. "They like to hear music." As the bands complied, Harris would then turn to the spectators lining the street. "They're doing a great job," he said. "Let's hear some applause." Economy not affecting Memorial Day Parades

Connecticut Post
Sunday, May 24, 2009
By Genevieve Reilly

Cities and towns these days are looking for all kinds of ways to trim costs, but suggestions that expenditures on annual Memorial Day parades be cut back are being called out of step.  Fairfield Police Detective Fred Caruso first broached the idea, as the town officials wrestled with the budget for the coming fiscal year. Perhaps, Caruso suggested, in these tough economic times, the Memorial Day parade and Fourth of July fireworks show should be cancelled.  It's not an idea that town officials, despite their shared fiscal problems, are considering. "Not at all," said Trumbull First Selectman Raymond G. Baldwin Jr. "We're not cutting back." The town spends between $12,000 and $14,000 each year on the parade that travels down Main Street. That cost includes overtime for police and public works crews for cleanup, according to Baldwin. "You're honoring your veterans once a year, you're not going to cut back on that," the Marine Corps veteran said. Click here for the full story

The Trumbull High School Golden Eagle Band participates in two pardes on Memorial Day.  They will particiate in the Shellton - Derby Parade early in the morning on Monday, May 26th and then come back home to particpate in the parade down Main Street in Trumbull.

Trumbull takes 2nd in WGI National Percussion Championship

Connecticut Post
Saturday, April 18, 2009
www.connpost.com

Trumbull High Golden Eagle Percussion took second place in the final round of the WGI Percussion World Championships on Saturday, April, 18th.

The Golden Eagle Percussion Ensemble performed admirably in the preliminary rounds that took place over the three day event, and ensured them an invitation to the final round of competition at the WGI "Winter Guard International" event which took place in Dayton Ohio. The Golden Eagle performance this year was entitled "Fear" which portrays both the rational and irrational fear people experience in their lives.

Winter Guard International (WGI) also known as the "Sport of the Arts" brings music to life through performance in a competitive format. Winter Percussion Ensembles that perform in the Scholastic Marching Open class, perform their music while doing intricate and expressive marching routines. Ensembles are also ranked by difficulty of their performance. Connecticut fared quite well in national competition with Trumbull finishing second and Stamford finishing seventh in the Scholastic Open Marching class of competition.

The World Guard received some great exposure in our local paper.  Special Thanks have to go to Kevin Katske who went out to Dayton with the Guard in his role as "Superman/Band Photographer." Just one week after the World Guard Group Photo went online, the Trumbull Times showcased some guard photos in a half page color collection of pictures both online and in the local paper. The THSGEMB and Trumbull Times are working to get the full suite of pictures taken by Kevin to be available from the Trumbull Times Web Site, but we are not quite where we want to be yet in terms data exchange, so for now the complete set of photos will be available for download from our site. So at the bottom of this story, you will find a complete set of attachments in JPG format that are suitable for download.

Another routine weekend for the Trumbull World Guard and Trumbull Winter Percussion Ensemble. The first weekend of April was busy for Goden Eagle fans, as the Guard was in Dayton Ohio, and Percussion was in Shelton.

Trumbull Golden Eagle Band and the Trumbull Times web site blur some lines

We have been working with the Trumbull Times site to have the Trumbull Times showcase more of the "real time" stories that our Band can provide to both the members of this site, the community and Trumbull Times readers. For that matter anyone who follows the Golden Eagle band on the web benefits from an effort like this.  This week begins a chapter in this cooperative effort. Be patient, this is a work in progress and we may make many changes before we get it right.  But we would love to get your feedback on how we might be ablt to make this better. For now provide that feedback to the mailbox of bandinfo@thsgembcorp.com and someone will get back to you.

Below is the complete set of photos that will be made available on the Trumbull Times web site

That's one for the history books...

On behalf of ALL of the students, instructors, and parents of the Trumbull High School Golden Eagle Marching Band, please accept our THANK YOU for your gracious support!

We have removed the fund raising thermometer from the website. At the time of this writing, we have collected approximately $54,000 of our goal of $55,000.  We are grateful to ALL of the individuals, corporations, and charities that have already contributed.  We will be individually thanking EVERYONE who we have contact information for.

Unfortunately, the cost of the trip has exceeded $60,000 and your donations are ALWAYS welcomed and DEEPLY appreciated. In addition to receiving your donations or buying a tie (see below), we have other fund raising events planned to help to continue to defray these costs and will keep you informed as the details are firmed up.

One such fund raising event will be our Winter Concert on a date to be announced in the near future.  Our band will be playing the music we played for President Obama.  After the concert you will be able to meet the students and instructors that marched in the parade and hear their stories first hand.

A band of THSGEMB's stature can not exist without the enthusiastic support of a municipality's leadership: for this we thank Ray Baldwin, the town's First Selectman, Ralph Iassogna, Superintent of Schools, and Dr. Robert Tremaglio, Trumbull High School Principal.

We hope that you have followed some of the coverage of THSGEMB's part of this momentuous event in this nation's history.  We are deeply grateful to ALL the members of the media for their interest in telling the story of our deserving students, their band director Peter Horton, and their assistant band director Tom Whitmoyer.

There are a lot of stories to tell from this trip, the biggest being the band's withstanding the severe cold and performing flawlessly for our nation's new President. But your web editor's lasting memory will be the look on the faces of the students when they returned from the parade. I was struck that while everyone of them looked tired, they looked content: content at a job well done and content at taking part in history in the making.

Selected after review by military music and drill experts as one of 27 high school bands from 1,382 applicants, let no one anywhere doubt that this band earned and deserved to be in this parade at this moment in American history.  I think Michelle Obama's enthusiastic waving at our students is testimony enough that they did what they came to do: represent Trumbull, represent Connecticut, and usher in a new President and a new era in the story that is America.

These students witnessed a page turning in the history books.  Your support made it possible for each of them to weave those pages into their own lives, their own histories.

And for that, everyone that is the Trumbull High School Golden Eagle Marching Band humbly expresses our profound thanks.

Trumbull High School Golden Eagle Recent Publicity

The Story "that got away" or Highlights from April 5th 2009

You could say it was another routine weekend for the Trumbull World Guard and the Trumbull Winter Percussion Ensemble. This weekend saw two more competitions at the national and state level and two more successful places for the World Guard and Percussionists. Closer to home the Top ranked Winter Percussion group entered the Musical Arts Conference (MAC) Championships held on Saturday at Shelton High School. The Golden Eagle Percussionists were favored to win the Marching Open class and they did not disappoint finishing in first place, Stamford was close behind with a second place finish. In the marching A Class, other local schools doing well were the winner: Cheshire followed by Norwalk who finished second, Shelton placed fourth, Newtown placed sixth and Central was 9th.

Just one week-end ago were the MAC Championship's for World Guard in Trumbull, and this week-end the Trumbull Golden Eagle girls and other MAC representatives were off to compete in national championship competition which took place in Dayton, Ohio.  This three-day event is where schools from all over the country come to compete on a world stage. Dominant schools from the Musical Arts Conference (MAC) sent at least two familiar names from Connecticut in Trumbull and Cheshire which were both competing in the "Scholastic World Class." Cheshire had gotten the best of Trumbull most of the season in other MAC Competitions over the past few months, but this year Trumbull held nothing back in the National Championships finishing well ahead of expectations to take 11th place a strong improvement over last year's 16th place finish. Cheshire did well too finishing in 14th place, validating both the dominance of Trumbull and MAC competitors as they represent the schools on the east coast in National Championships.  Trumbull received quite a compliment when they were quoted in the www.wgi.org web site recap of the Scholastic World final competition:

"A colorful floor covering beautifully set the stage for Trumbull’s light and airy program, "Aurora" Solid color flags in a glorious array of reds, pinks and oranges led to more intricate flag designs, and a dramatic array of solid rifle tosses. Exuding strength, confidence and glee in everything they do, Don’t be surprised if Trumbull moves to the top of the pack in the Scholastic World class in years to come." *1

Those words were from the WGI organization but are an incredible compliment to both Trumbull and the level of competition that MAC sends to these events.  *1 http:// www.wgi.org/news_detail.php?id=2161 - and a larger picture of the World Guard can be found at the end of this article - suitable for downloading.

World Guard and Winter Percussion host major WGI events and get to perform on their Home Stage

TRUMBULL -- At Winter Guard International's color guard competition last weekend at Trumbull High School, the host school's Golden Eagle World Guard took second place in the Scholastic World Class event. Trumbull High finished one-half point behind Cheshire High School in the preliminary round of competition, and just over a point behind Cheshire in the final round. Nearly 50 schools, 11 of them from Connecticut, competed in six classes over the two-day event. The full standings are posted on the Winter Guard's Web site, www.wgi.org.

Trumbull's program, titled "Aurora," was set to the music of Puccini's aria, "O Mio Babbino Caro." The performance included 21 girls, ranging from eighth-graders to high school seniors. In color guard, or its indoor version known as winter guard, dance movements are combined with the spinning and tossing of flags, sabers and mock rifles.

On Saturday, the WGI will hold its Trumbull Regional Winter Percussion Event at Trumbull High, with nearly 20 groups expected to compete from around the Northeast, including six high schools from Connecticut. Boston University and Penn State will also be represented. Winter percussion is an indoor event in which the battery and pit sections of a band perform a program of marching, music and theater. Trumbull's unit earned second place in their class in last year's national WGI percussion championships. The group began this season with a first-place finish last week in Stamford.  To read the article online click here.

The Trumbull High School winter percussion team hosted a regional competition at the High School Saturday and the Golden Eagle percussionists took first place in their class with their show, "Fear." The team will travel to Dayton, Ohio next month for this years national championships.

The Story "that got away"  or Highlights from WGI Percussion

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

Playing host to the North East’s Winter Guard International event on Saturday, March 7th was just what the Trumbull High Golden Eagle Percussion Ensemble needed. Trumbull High School placed first in the Scholastic Marching Open class with their show entitled “Fear.”  The Golden Eagle performance, which portrays both the rational and irrational fear people experience in their lives, placed Trumbull in both first place against other schools in its regional competition and it secured the top seat in nationwide regional competition. Stamford High School took third place in the Scholastic Marching Open competition.

In all, eighteen high school, college, and independent ensembles (with a total of 469 performers) from as far north as Portsmouth, NH and as far south as Chantilly, VA, participated in this weekend’s Regional event at Trumbull High. Six of the high school competitors were from Connecticut. In other competition, local schools faired very well. In the Scholastic Open Concert class, Naugatuck High School placed second with their performance of “Season of the Magi.”  Stamford’s Westhill High School placed first in Scholastic Marching A class with their show “The Melodies of Life” and Norwalk High School placed third behind Chantilly High School from Virginia, with their show “This Just In!” Official scoring can be found at www.wgi.org

Winter Guard International (WGI) also known as the “Sport of the Arts” brings music to life through performance in a competitive format.  Ensembles perform in either concert classes where they stand and perform, or in marching classes where they perform while doing intricate and expressive marching routines. Ensembles are also ranked by difficulty of performance. The WGI organization uses a regional approach to their competitions that allow for numerous competitions to take place simultaneously throughout the Country and Canada so that they can rank teams nationally. The WGI International competitions will culminate in a three-day event that takes place in the 3rd week of April in Dayton, Ohio.  Connecticut has been well represented at the Percussion Championship the last few years, with Trumbull taking 2nd place nationally in the Scholastic Marching Open competition in 2008

Shopping and THSGEMB Fund Raising - Amazon and iGift

Just a reminder that It doesn't have to be the holidays for you to start your internet shopping search at THSGEMB and make us money from Amazon or iGive. Starting your searches and purchases from here works year round and makes us real money, so please think of us before you start your online shopping. It is easy money for us and we both win.  Remember that all of your searches and purchases made through the link on the left frame benefit the THSGEMB.

Look at the bottom most portion of the left column or frame - for the Amazon and the iGive logos

  1. Start your order to Amazon through this link.  Even searches for products make us pennies!
  2. There is also note about iGive, another online buying program that allows you to search over 700 popular (and I mean popular!) websites and buy products.  Like Amazon, even simple searches make us money.  Buying products makes us much more money. iGive sometimes has special prices and coupons, so it pays to check there first.

If you are going to shop, one of these two ways will allow you to give a gift to THSGEMB!

Hint, Hint, and if you should forget about THSGEMB until midway through your shopping experience, then sometimes you might be able to save your proposed purchases in a shopping cart under that internet sites login account (usually your email address or other login / pasword information.)  Then sometimes you can retrieve your cart's contents just as you left it, if you start up another Browser like Firefox or Internet Exploder and remember to go back to your customer account and sign into your local merchants login account, then ideally all of your cart is intact and everything is exactly as you left it, you can then continue your shopping experience, you can then make the final purchase after you have initiated the search from here - and the gift goes to us.
